U0256 means a module on the network lost communication with the front controls interface module (FCIM), the electronics behind the center-stack switches and knobs for climate, audio and related functions. It sits in the U02xx block of lost-communication codes. The module that stores it is the one that noticed the silence; the FCIM is the one that went quiet.
Severity: low. Can you keep driving? Yes. The engine and transmission are unaffected. Symptoms are center-stack buttons that do nothing, a radio or climate display that will not respond, and sometimes a warning from another module that lost the data. If it arrives with many other U codes, the underlying fault can also produce a no-crank or reduced power, which is the case to have looked at soon.
What GM found
General Motors' preliminary information PIT5606 (revised through version J in December 2020) covers the 2017 to 2021 GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5: power door locks cycling while driving or intermittently inoperative, loss of data with multiple U codes including U0256, unwanted seat or mirror movement, and intermittent no-crank or reduced power. GM's causes: the instrument panel wiring harness chafed at the steering column to intermediate-shaft connection, and water intrusion at the body control module or in connectors X500, X200, X201, X600, X700 and X800, from an HVAC drain hose blocked, misrouted or disconnected. The correction inspects the harness at the base of the column, repairs damaged wires and ties the harness away from the shaft, and checks the drain hose and connectors for water.
A code on a dash module traced to a steering shaft and a drain hose is a reminder of what a lost-communication code actually says: the module is not talking, and the reasons are usually power, ground, water or a wire.
Causes, in the order they are found
Power or ground to the FCIM: a fuse, a ground under the dash, a connector backed off.
A chafed harness on the module's bus or power wiring, as in GM's column case.
Water in connectors under the dash from a blocked evaporator drain, a windshield seal or a cowl leak.
Low battery voltage during cranking, which resets low-priority modules and leaves several U codes.
A bus fault on the branch that serves the center stack, usually with other modules on the same branch logging codes.
The module, last.
A diagnostic order
- Record every U code and which modules stored them. U0256 alone points at the FCIM's own power, ground or connector; a long list points at shared power, a chafed harness or water, per U codes and module communication.
- Test the battery and charging.
- Inspect the harness at the base of the steering column where the intermediate shaft passes, on any vehicle, and specifically per GM's bulletin on the Acadia and XT5.
- Check for water in the footwells and in the connectors under the dash, and confirm the HVAC drain is routed and clear.
- Open the FCIM connector, check for corrosion and terminal tension, and measure power and ground key on.
- Check the bus wires from the module to the nearest splice.
- Repair the harness, dry and repin connectors, fix the drain, then clear the codes and verify over several key cycles. Replace the module only if it has power, ground and a healthy bus and still does not respond.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with a U0256 code?
Yes. The center-stack controls may not respond, but the engine and transmission are unaffected. If the code arrives with many others and the vehicle has cranked poorly or gone into reduced power, have the harness and connectors checked soon.
What is the front controls interface module?
The electronics behind the buttons and knobs in the center of the dash that send climate, audio and related commands to the other modules over the network. When it stops transmitting, those controls go dead and other modules store U0256.
Why would a dash module code come from the steering column?
Because the instrument panel harness runs past the steering intermediate shaft, and on the 2017 to 2021 Acadia and XT5 GM found it chafed there, along with water in connectors under the dash from a blocked HVAC drain. The module was fine; its wiring was not.
How much does it cost to fix U0256?
A harness repair or drying and repinning a connector is an hour or two. Clearing a drain hose is minor. A replacement module is a moderate part plus programming.
