- P0601 does not mean the same thing on every make. On Dodge it is "Internal PCM Controller Failure". On Audi the same five characters describe a different fault — Audi: "Lack of proper voltage to the PCM, Defective PCM memory module, Defective PCM ground circuit(s), Defective PCM controlled output devices". A definition copied from a forum for the wrong marque reads perfectly plausibly and sends the diagnosis somewhere unrelated, which is the single most common way manufacturer codes get misused.
- The definition names the circuit, not the failed part. P0601 tells you which reading fell outside its window on Dodge. The sensor, its wiring, its connector, the ground path, and the condition being correctly reported are all candidates. Replacing the component named in the code before testing the circuit is the most common and most expensive diagnostic mistake.
- Read the freeze frame before clearing it. The module stored engine speed, load, coolant temperature and fuel trims at the moment the code set, and that snapshot is usually more diagnostic than the code text.
